Juan Gabriel, Mexican Singer-Songwriter, Dies at 66

Recording artist, known for romantic ballads, dies of a heart attack

Alberto Aguilera Valadez, known professionally as Juan Gabriel, died Sunday at age 66.

Aguilera Valadez was a Mexican singer-songwriter and actor. He was known for his romantic ballads and has sold more than 100 million records worldwide. He died of a heart attack in his home in Santa Monica, California.

Aguilera Valadez was born in Parácuaro, Michoacán, Mexico, on January 7, 1950. He began his music career in the 1970s and released his first album, "El Alma Joven," in 1971. He went on to release more than 30 albums, including "Recuerdos II" (1984), "Querida" (1989), and "Abrázame Muy Fuerte" (1995).

Aguilera Valadez was also a successful actor, appearing in more than 20 films and television shows. He was best known for his roles in "El Noa Noa" (1980) and "Es Mi Vida" (1982).

Aguilera Valadez was a recipient of numerous awards, including the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. He was also inducted into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2016.
