Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's Longest-Serving Prime Minister

Early Life and Career

Benjamin Netanyahu was born on October 21, 1949, in Tel Aviv, Israel. He is the son of Benzion Netanyahu, a historian and Zionist activist, and Tzila Netanyahu, a writer and editor. Netanyahu grew up in Jerusalem and attended Yavne Military School. After graduating, he served in the Israel Defense Forces' Sayeret Matkal special forces unit. Following his military service, Netanyahu studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned a bachelor's degree in architecture and a master's degree in business administration.

Political Career

Netanyahu began his political career in 1982, when he was elected to the Knesset, Israel's parliament, as a member of the Likud party. He served as Deputy Foreign Minister from 1988 to 1991 and as Foreign Minister from 1991 to 1992. In 1993, Netanyahu was elected Prime Minister of Israel. He served in that role until 1999, when he was defeated by Ehud Barak. Netanyahu returned to power in 2009 and served as Prime Minister until 2021. In 2022, Netanyahu was re-elected Prime Minister, making him Israel's longest-serving Prime Minister in history.
